# Getting started

> Adding a widget takes less than a minute. This page explains where widgets live, how to add one and how to work with them safely.

## Before you start
- IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.x with IBM DOORS Next (most widgets) or any ELM application (User Audit).
- A modern browser: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox or Safari.
- The SmarterWidgets catalog registered on your ELM server by your administrator. [Contact SmarterProcess](https://widgets.doorsnext.com/about/#contact) to get access.
- Your usual DOORS Next permissions. Widgets can only do what you are allowed to do yourself.

## Add a widget to a DOORS Next module
1. Open a module in DOORS Next.
2. Open the ELM Mini Dashboard on the right side of the page (**Show Mini Dashboard**).
3. Click **Add Widget**, choose the SmarterWidgets catalog and pick the widget you need. The catalog shows a short description and a preview of each widget.
4. The widget appears in the ELM Mini Dashboard and is ready to use. It stays there for your next visit.

Widgets that work on the whole server, such as Baseline Archiver or User Audit, can also be added in the same way to the ELM Mini Dashboard of the other ELM applications.

## Work in a change set
> **We recommend running every widget that changes data inside a DOORS Next change set.** If a run makes changes you do not want, you simply discard the change set and nothing reaches the stream. Deliver the change set only after you have checked the result. The Excel change report of the run helps with that review.

## How every widget is organized
All widgets share the same layout, so once you know one, you know them all:

- **Header** with the widget name and buttons to refresh the context and reset the widget.
- **Description** that explains in one or two sentences what the widget does, with a collapsible **How it works** panel.
- **Work sections**, usually **Module** (the whole open module) and **Selection** (the artifacts you selected), each with one clear main button.
- **Execution Status** with the progress, a **Stop** button, the result as summary tiles, the list of anything that could not be changed (with **Retry**) and the change report.
- **Footer** with the version and the release date.

## Settings
Each widget has a few settings in the widget menu under **Edit**, for example the size of a batch or whether notifications appear over the DOORS Next page. Your settings are remembered in your browser. Most users never need to change them.

## Updates
When a newer version of a widget is available, a blue **New Version Available** label appears in the widget header. Hover over it to see what changed. The page of each widget in this documentation shows what changed in its latest version.
